Children in the rural township of Zweletemba (Worcester) are at risk from poor nutrition, neglect and potential violation in the absence of supervision and a lack of adequate support for learning and development due to poorly resourced homes, communities and schools. Sinetemba is a community based NPO that has established programmes to address these needs and we operate from containers in the township. Dare to stand out mentorship program -D2SO - by:   Open Door Community Foundation

Accredited: Not Accredited
Running from: 2018-02-05 - 2018-12-18

The reason we are a Youth Desk is because we deal directly as young people with other young people who struggle with finding their purpose as we are purpose pushers. The desk encourages and enables young people to participate actively in identifying the causes of youth violence and crime, and to collaborate in creating social crime prevention strategies for their communities. We work with other youth and youth groups to develop projects that are attractive, sustainable and implementable, and to respond to the specific safety needs of their communities. Initiatives Includes o Ongoing leadership and mentorship training for Youth Desk volunteers. o Peer educational support. Ongoing counselling, educational workshops. o Community upliftment programs. One day booth camps. o Youth Summit for change camps and workshops o School holiday programs and excursions. o Motivational talks at school assemblies, parent meetings and community initiatives. o Substance abuse & anti-gangsterism. Youth in our communities do not unnecessarily want to be gangsters and drug users, but they do so because of various factors such as absence of positive role models, broken home, negative peer group pressure and bullying lack of recreational facilities in our our communities, and lack of real interest by authorities in them and communities. We foresee that this project will in a very big way address some of these factors, , but importantly so, to develop also an entrepreneurial spirit amongst them.   more >

Primary After School Reading Programme - by:   Ebenezer Primary

Accredited: Not Accredited
Running from: -

We are aware of current statistics that our learners are lagging behind when it comes to literacy and numeracy skills. The recent PRIL-results indicate that a substantial percentage of our grade 4 learners cannot read or comprehend properly. We are a parallel-medium school (English and Afrikaans) and it is our experience that especially the Afrikaans learners are struggling in their home language. Our systemic results show that our English-speaking learners fair much better in the annual provincial tests. We are trying to embark on a programme in 2018 which will enable us to enhance our learners' reading and numeracy skills in both languages of learning and teaching. Former teachers and other skilled people will help with rolling out of the after school intervention programme. The intervention will be based on the current CAPS curriculum. To be inclusive as possible transport arrangements must be put in place for those learners living further afield from the school.   more >

Theatre4Youth - by:   ASSITEJ SA

Accredited: Not Accredited
Running from: 2017-12-06 - 2018-12-31

This programme creates a national framework for connecting children and young people with the theatre best suited to them. The Theatre4Youth site (www.theatre4youth.co.za) serves as a facilitating bridge between theatre and education, making it easy for schools to book excellent productions for their learners, and for theatre companies to tour productions to schools. It moderates the quality of the theatre presented in schools through a participatory feedback system, serves as a space for local artists to develop collaborations with communities as resident artists, and assists theatre companies in making their work more relevant and accessible to schools. There is also a print version of the catalogue available. The Theatre4youth programme mentors and supports artists to take their work to schools or to communicate with schools about their programmes in theatres and at festivals. Through Theatre4Youth, we take children to the theatre and take theatre to children in creches, community halls, schools, theatres and other spaces. (We reached 70 361 beneficiaries in the 2016 financial year.) There are three Theatre4Youth full-time coordinators, each based in a different province: Western Cape, Gauteng and KZN. We also have part-time representatives in other provinces. This dynamic team ensures that ASSITEJ SA knows what is happening in all parts of the country and that we are able to strategize to connect artists with audiences and vice versa.   more >

Running from: 2017-12-06 - 2020-12-31

Kickstarter targets teachers and community-based artist facilitators to build capacity in delivering the formal Creative Arts curriculum in schools. It uses an experiential, easily accessible, step-by-step methodology, which has been tried and tested with teachers as the "Creative Voices" methodology since 2000. Through 2015-2016, we worked with 57 teachers of Creative Arts in 20 schools in Free-State and Kwazulu Natal, to assist them to deliver on the compulsory Creative arts curriculum, benefitting thousands of children. We also measured the impact of Creative Arts (drama, dance, music and visual arts) on all aspects of learning and teaching. This programme is now being upscaled for further roll-outs, supported by Rand Merchant Bank. In 2018-2020 we will be rolling out to a further 30 schools across three provinces (now also including Northern Cape).   more >

Presentations range from 35 to 50 minutes in length (depending on grade level served) and include group and individual performance, discussion through examples, and a question and answer period. Our goal is to establish a program which will be available to all schools in the Western Cape area, reaching students of all ages and backgrounds. We also want to educate students about our great Cape Jazz Heritage and create audiences for tomorrow. The workshops demonstrate how improvisation is part of everyone's life by comparing the process of creating music to language, science, and day to day communication.   more >
