Programme Description
PREVENTATIVE-, SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMME & JOB CREATION (YOUTH AT RISK): MCM is impacting the Barbarian Gangsters (Youth at Risk – YAR) which consist of 37 youth from the age of 11 – 23 years old. They stay in the Tiffany’s Community Centre’s area. Our staff who is also living in that area, knows them very well and have the trust of the community to “work” with these youth. Our programmes for the YAR are (1) Sport (they attend our gymnasium daily for free and MCM’s Sport Park), (2) Psychological training ie. Anger Management Course (3) Cultural activities ie. They saw “Kanala” in the Athol Fugard Theatre and the film “Noem my Skollie.” This was life changing and Drakenstein Correctional Services agreed to conduct (4) Skills training for these YAR. We are in a planning phase with this new focus to give them a positive alternative which will assist them with a job opportunity and a new way of thinking and belonging. Our next challenge is to get involved with the training of the unemployed parents of the YAR. They create a major problem, because they do not have a healthy relationship with their kids and do not encourage them to go to school or study. Since we have started with this programme for the YAR in March 2016, six YAR members went back to Secondary School.
