Programme Description
Project Youth reach out has been running for 4 years. We have been stationed at Tygersig primary School (Uitsig) and Ravensmead High School (Ravensmead), situated in the Cape Flats. We are currently teaching ages 10-13 at the Primary school with an attendance of about 20 children and ages 13-16 at the High School with an attendance of about 20 children. The numbers fluctuate as some children come and go, but the amounts given are the dedicated ones who attend eagerly and diligently. This is a continuous project which will run for as long as possible and with the co-operation of the schools involved.
Continuous dance classes are taught twice a week, training them in Classical Ballet and contemporary dance to ensure skills development and progression. Regular attendance registers are taken to ensure the dedication and commitment from the youth.
Our programme for 2017 entails weekly dance classes with a progress report at the end of each school term, as to encourage the youth to return to class in the new term. The youth receive a certificate at the end of the school year in order to progress to the next dance level or grade.
The Youth had the opportunity to perform on a professional stage this year as part of the Baxter dance festival 2017. This falls in line with our objective of youth exposure on professional platforms with the hopes that they will be able to grow into it as a profession some day.
