The School Food Garden Programme is an initiative of SCVG (Saldanha Community Vegetable Growers) that establishes and maintains sustainable vegetable gardens at schools to promote food security, youth development, and practical agricultural education. The programme transforms underutilised school spaces into productive gardens where learners gain hands-on experience in planting, soil preparation, irrigation, composting, crop maintenance, and sustainable farming practices. The programme serves as a living classroom, providing opportunities for learners to develop life skills, environmental awareness, teamwork, responsibility, and an appreciation for healthy eating. Fresh vegetables harvested from the garden contribute to improving food security and can support school nutrition initiatives and vulnerable households where appropriate. In addition to benefiting learners, the programme actively involves parents, volunteers, and community members, strengthening partnerships between schools and the local community. Through mentoring and practical training, SCVG equips young people with agricultural knowledge that can lead to future employment, entrepreneurship, or home food production.
