Our school programme has been developed for grade 3 learners and combines in-school humane education with an 8-week after-school programme comprising equine assisted activities as well as wildlife appreciation sessions. These take place on the farm and with outings to wildlife sanctuaries. Outcomes are focused on empathy development and coping. All activities are facilitated by a qualified psychologist and assistant. The equine assisted activities double as an ideal assessment opportunity for emotional dysfunction due to trauma, as well as for identifying early signs of anti-social personality disorder (a red flag for delinquency and possible criminal behaviour later on). Children identified as being in need of therapeutic intervention are provided with animal assisted therapy during school hours. Depending on the situation, family members may be invited for equine assisted communication and teamwork sessions on the farm (outside of school hours). Based on the outcomes of those sessions, family members may be referred to other organisations within our Empathy Network - a select group of local, established organisations providing family therapy and counselling services, occupational therapy, parenting workshops, crafting projects, health care and education, skills development programmes, adult education, animal welfare assistance, recreational sports, substance abuse programmes and fellowships… any organisations who are able to assist in supporting the family.   more >

The Khanyisa Programme involves placing unemployed youth in Grade 2 or 3 classrooms for at least six months, where they are exclusively used as Reading Partners. The objective of this programme is to assist schools in establishing a culture of reading throughout the school by increasing access to exciting books, training staff in ways to promote a love of reading and making reading a daily practice.The Reading Partner ensure that each child in the class has daily individual paired reading sessions. The Year Beyond Programme (Yebo) is a programme born out of the Provincial Youth Development Strategy launched in 2015. Rogz Academy has been part of this journey since then. The programme recruits young people aged 18-25 into a structured 10-month professional and personal development journey at the same time as they are trained and placed in a meaningful work place opportunity. The programme is designed to harness the power of youth by training bright and motivated young people to serve as volunteer community educators running after school academic programmes for learners in under-resourced primary schools across the Western Cape. We manage 4 schools in the Dunoon cluster and between 24-28 young people: Dunoon Primary, Sophakama, Silverleaf and Marconi Beam (Joe Slovo). The purpose of the porgramme is two-fold: a) provide academic support which strengthens and improves learners' academic abilities and performance in numeracy and literacy in Grades 3 and 4; and b) to provide unemployed matriculants and graduates, aged 18-25 years old with a self-development programme and valuable work experience.   more >
